UMCFA is passionate about seeing new Maine Coon breeders raised up to be knowledgeable and ethical, armed with the skills and tools needed to successfully breed healthy, well adjusted kittens that are a good representation of all the best qualities of the breed. We have developed a Mentoring Program, available to UMCFA members, to help support new breeders get off to the best possible start in this wonderful venture called breeding pedigree cats.
The world of pedigree cat breeding is an interesting and challenging one and people decide to start breeding for several reasons, not always exploring what is involved in the process before investing their time and money.
There are some breeders who believe that by selling an entire to someone, they have supported the ‘newbie’ in achieving their goal and their involvement now is complete. As a result, there are new breeders setting-up other new breeders without providing the mentorship that should support this process. In turn, not only is the ‘newbie’ breeder without a mentor, they have no real idea of what is involved in breeding and what being a responsible, ethical breeder is.
What is mentorship? According to the Oxford Dictionary mentorship is described as ‘a period of time during which a person receives guidance from a mentor’ and a mentor accordingly is ‘an experienced and trusted adviser’ who advises and trains.
If you are a recently new breeder, are interested in starting breeding or perhaps you have been breeding a while and never had a mentor, we would love to walk beside you in a tailored mentoring program where you will be paired with an experienced breeder who can help advise you on:
